In a significant leap forward for medical device manufacturing, leading industry players are now integrating In-Mold Decoration (IMD) technology to produce next-generation antimicrobial interface panels. This innovation addresses the stringent hygiene and durability standards mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The application focuses on high-touch components such as the control keypads for blood glucose monitors and dialysis machines. By utilizing the IMD process, manufacturers embed graphics and functional coatings directly into the plastic substrate during molding. This s a seamless, non-porous surface that eliminates crevices where bacteria can accumulate.

Furthermore, this new generation of devices incorporates silver ion (Ag+) coating technology directly into the IMD film. Silver ions are renowned for their broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy, actively inhibiting the growth of pathogens on the device surface. The result is a user interface that is not only exceptionally durable—resistant to chemicals, abrasion, and wear—but also actively contributes to infection control protocols in clinical and home-care settings.
