Automotive Interior Quality Enters New Era with Accelerated Adoption of IMD Technology

Creation date:2026/6/24 10:20:41

As the automotive industry pivots toward electric vehicles (EVs), the demand for premium, durable, and aesthetically pleasing interiors has reached unprecedented levels. In-Mold Decoration (IMD) technology is rapidly becoming the industry standard for manufacturing high-touch components such as center console panels, instrument clusters, and door trims.

Leading the charge, Tesla has implemented advanced high-gloss IMD processes in its latest Model 3 refresh. This application demonstrates the transformative potential of the technology, allowing for the creation of seamless, joint-free surfaces that exude luxury and sophistication. Unlike traditional painting or manual wrapping methods, IMD infuses the decorative film directly into the plastic substrate during molding.

This results in a surface that is highly resistant to scratching, abrasion, and chemical exposure—critical for maintaining interior quality over the vehicle's lifespan. By adopting IMD, automakers are not only elevating the sensory experience for drivers and passengers but also streamlining assembly processes, reducing material waste, and enhancing the long-term durability of their EV interiors.
